2016 is a special year for the Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials which run from May 4-8. It is the 25th anniversary of the first sponsorship from the Cirencester based company, and represents an exceptional duration for this type of support. The company are marking the occasion by donating a copse of 25 trees, to be planted prominently in the Duke of Beaufort’s Gloucestershire Park.

As ever the competition itself will showcase the very pinnacle of the sport, especially as this is an Olympic year, and many nations will be seeing how their hopefuls compete at the highest level prior to selection. Now in his third year as designer, Italian Giuseppe Della Chiesa is bucking tradition by having the competitors setting off in the same direction as last year, but then taking an intriguing diversion halfway round.

For those in the Cotswold area who have yet to experience the spectacle of one of the country’s great sporting events, the Thursday and Friday are filled with the dressage section – the ‘dancing’ horses – then on Saturday the same horses and riders tackle the challenging cross country course of about 30 solid obstacles, such as ditches, logs, gates, lakes and hedges over four miles of beautiful parkland.

The Sunday is the climax, when those still left in the competition take on a course of knock-down coloured jumps in the arena. The overnight leader goes last, so the tension is upheld until the last pole has been cleared (or not!).

Badminton is a great day out for the whole family, where children and dogs are very welcome. There are many food outlets and over 500 tented shops to entice you when you are taking a break from watching the world’s greatest all-round riders.

The week of sport kicks off on the Tuesday with the newly rebranded Mitsubishi Motors Cup contests, which have become very popular with the amateur ranks of riders who get the chance to gallop over the hallowed turf of Badminton Park, before the international competition begins.

Although Badminton takes advanced bookings, it is also possible to buy tickets on the gate for all of the days, though the grandstand seats for the final day are usually sold out early. Each year Badminton supports one specific charity, and it was announced in

November that it would again be World Horse Welfare.
